    TUNGABHADRA BOARD

    The Tungabhadra Board is a Statutory Body constituted by the President of India in exercise of the powers vested under sub section (4), Section 66 of the Andhra Pradesh State Act, 1953 for completion of the Tungabhadra Project and its Operation & Maintenance and started its functioning from 1953. Tungabhadra Board is an Interstate Project of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana States.

    TB Board consists of Chairman appointed by Govt. of India (Member Secretary, KRMB) and four Members representing Govt. of India (JS&FA), Govt. of Karnataka (Secretary, WRD), Govt. of Andhra Pradesh (Engineer-in-Chief (Irrigation)) and Govt. of Telangana (Engineer-in-Chief (Irrigation)). In the discharge of its assigned functions, the Board exercises powers of State Government.

    Board appoints a whole time Secretary for performing the assigned functions of the Board. The posts of Secretary and Assistant Secretary are filled by deputation from the Govt. of India. All other regular posts of the Board are cadre posts of the participating States of Govt. of Karnataka, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh & Govt. of Telangana (Share of Telangana State to be confirmed by Govt. of Telangana) in an agreed ratio. The work charged and contingent staff of the Board are treated as Board employees.

    The major functions of the Board are regulation of supplies of water to the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana in accordance to the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal award, regulation & monitoring of Power from Power Houses on the right side, maintenance of the Dam & Reservoir common to three States viz., Right half of the Dam & 33 spillway gates including safety aspects, maintenance of the common portion of the Right Bank High Level Canal and Right Bank Low Level Canal along with its common distributaries and any other works common to the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka & Telangana.

    Board conducts its meetings once in 6 months and resolve the issues put forth before it. The Budget required for the Board for its functioning is voted by Govt. of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, expenditures are initially borne by Govt. of Karnataka based on the budget voted by the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and later on apportioned between the Member States in an agreed Ratio through book adjustment by the Accountant General, AP & Karnataka through RBI, Nagpur. Board exercises powers of a State Government under various codes, manuals, rules and regulations. It makes rules for the conduct of its own business. The regulation of water is carried out in accordance with the agreed working table which is prepared every year by the Tungabhadra Board in consultation with the State Governments and is reviewed from time to time during the water year.
