CENTRAL GROUND WATER BOARD FARIDABAD
Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) is a multi-disciplinary scientific organization of the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti Government of India. Central Ground Water Board is the National Apex Agency entrusted with the responsibilities of providing scientific inputs for management, exploration, monitoring, assessment, augmentation and regulation of ground water resources of the country
Mandate:
The mandate of Central Ground Water Board is to ” Develop and disseminate technologies and monitor and implement national policies for the scientific and sustainable development and management of India’s ground water resources, including their exploration, assessment, conservation, augmentation, protection from pollution, and distribution, based on principles of economic and ecological efficiency and equity”.

Organization Setup:
The Board is headed by Chairman and has five Members: Member (Headquarters), Member (South), Member (East), Member (North West), and Member (Central Ground Water Authority). CGWB is a multi-disciplinary scientific organization consisting of Hydrogeologists, Geophysicists, Chemists, Hydrologists, Hydrometeorologists, and Engineers. CGWB has about 600 Scientists, 150 Engineers, and 3250 supporting staff (Technical, Administrative, and Ministerial). CGWB has its headquarters at Bhujal Bhawan, Faridabad, Haryana. Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) operates from its office in New Delhi. Field activities are performed through its 18 Regional Offices, 10 State Unit Offices, and 17 Divisional offices.
Activities:
CGWB being the National apex organization is vested with the responsibilities to carry out scientific studies , exploration aided by drilling , monitoring of ground water regime, assessment, augmentation, management and regulation of country’s ground water resources. The major activities of the Board are:-
- National Aquifer mapping and Management (NAQUIM) involving Preparation of Aquifer Maps and Management Plans.
- Ground water explorations to delineate ground water worthy areas and potential aquifers
- Geophysical surveys to delineate ground water bearing zones etc.
- Periodic assessment of the country’s ground water resources
- Monitoring of Ground water levels and quality through ground Water observation wells.
- Dissemination of Ground Water Data and knowledge.
- Ground water modeling
- GIS and Remote sensing
- Regulation and control of ground water development and management by CGWA in coordination with State Government Organizations.
- Coordination with State Government with a view to establish benchmark methodologies for ground water studies.
- R & D studies in ground water sector and application and operationalization of new technologies/ techniques for ground water investigation, development and management.
- Water conservation and Artificial recharge to ground water
- Capacity building and knowledge transfer.

Rajiv Gandhi National Ground Water Training and Research Institute (RGNGWTRI) :

The Institute has been established as training arm of Central Ground Water Board, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal shakti, Government of India in the year 1997 at Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
The institute strives:
- To be an international center of excellence in Training, Research and Development in the groundwater sector
- To provide training to ground water professionals and sub-professionals in various fields of ground water
- To train NGO, PRIs and other stake holders of ground water
- To train various stake holders for taking up ground water monitoring and data collection work for Aquifer Mapping under Participatory Ground Water Management Program of National Project on Aquifer Management (NAQUIM)
- To undertake Research and development works in Ground Water Sector

Central Ground Water Authority

Regulation of ground water abstraction is being done at both Central and State levels. At the central level, Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) is vested with responsibility of regulation and control of groundwater development and management. CGWA issues Guidelines to regulate and control ground water extraction in India. CGWA regulates ground water extraction in 19 States/ UTs and in the remaining 17 States (15 States/ UTs have their own Acts and 2 States are regulating under some GO) NOCs for ground water withdrawal are granted by the respective SGWAs or designated authority.
